The competition for baseball scholarships in college is tough. There are 11.7 NCAA Division I scholarships per school. NCAA DII only has 9 and NAIA schools have 12. The most scholarships available are at NJCAA or junior colleges who have 24 scholarships. The NCAA and NAIA classify baseball as an equivalency sport which means the scholarships can be divided into partials and awarded out to more players than scholarship numbers. Meaning if you are awards a DI 50% or .5 partial scholarship, the coach has 11.2 more to award.

You will face a lot of competition for a baseball scholarship and it is important that you treat recruiting serious and like a job. Those who do are rewarded. Here are some of the most common mistakes see athletes make year after year.

Not believing in your talent. As hard as it is to believe I see many high school baseball players that should be playing in college but do not think they are good enough. Sometimes recruiting comes down to who wants it more once athletes reach a certain talent level.

Giving up during the recruiting process. Getting a scholarship is hard work. Many times athletes who are used to success are not prepared for the brutal nature of earning a scholarship. Those who can press forwards after being turned down by school after school are the ones who win in the end.

Choosing the wrong summer team. Playing in summer leagues has almost become a necessity. College coaches are not able to recruit during the season because they overlap. The summer is the main recruiting season for baseball. Don’t choose a league with you friends, choose a team that will maximize your exposure.

Neglecting your academics. This is something that is preventable and should never happen. By just getting over a 3.0 GPA you make it 100 times easier for a college to accept you academically and recruit you. If you are behind on your grades, make every effort today to turn them around.

Not being flexible. We are talking about being able to touch your toes here. College coaches want athletes who can play multiple positions. If you want the scholarship be willing to play and be able to play around the field.

Remember, these are just 5 critical mistakes we have seen and continue to see every year. Start your recruiting process early to get a baseball scholarship and treat it like a job. If you truly want a baseball scholarship, our recruiting system will show you the way. CLICK HERE to play college baseball.

Attending summer camps for baseball is a great way to help earn a baseball scholarship. These camps are held everywhere and vary in formats. There are private skills camps, mini-tournament camps and camps held by colleges and universities. There over 135,000 senior high school baseball players in the US alone all competing for the same 8,200 freshman roster spots. Those freshman spots are among DI, DII and DIII. Of those 8,200, only 1,100 are actually awarded a college baseball scholarship. Baseball recruiting is extremely competitive and you must do everything possible to earn an offer.

Attending baseball camps held by colleges and universities is a great way to gain exposure and if you perform well enough you can earn a scholarship offer on the spot. But just don’t go to any camp that sends you a brochure. You want to maximize your time and resources to make attending beneficial to your recruiting efforts.

Here are 5 tips to earning a scholarship at summer camps:

1. Attend specific camps: Attend camps that coaches invite you to personally. Coaches want a chance to see you perform in person. You should view these as a tryout.

2. Show up in shape: You need to use this week to stand out from the competition. Train for the camps and show up in peak physical condition. You will be surprised how many baseball players ignore this tip.

3. Be a leader: Encourage other athletes, be vocal, hustle and be first in line. Players that demonstrate leadership potential show their maturity and this is attractive to college coaches. This also shows you won’t be a behavior problem if you were to get recruited.

4. Dress like a pro: This sounds simple enough but many players don’t dress for these camps like they are a real ball player. Wear a clean uniform, have a jersey with your name on the back to be easily identified. Leave the jewelry and earrings at home. Your not a pro yet, but act like one.

5. Play multiple positions: Nothing is more exciting to a coach than a player who can stretch a coaches scholarship dollar. If you can play more than one position, do it. Diversity is good because it shows you are an athlete and a team player.

Treat summer camps like a tryout. They essentially are. Most other baseball players will just be going for something to do. You should be using these camps to impress the coach and raise your recruiting stock. If you play them the right way you will be on your way to earning a baseball scholarship.

Baseball scholarships are tough to get if you look at the numbers. This makes following a game plan for your recruiting even more crucial. If you go at baseball recruiting without any know-how, you will get beat. Let’s look at the numbers data for baseball.

Baseball is classified as a equivalency sport. This means there is a set number of scholarships that can be awarded, but the coach can divvy up the scholarships and awards partials to as many players as they wish. NCAA DI baseball teams can award 11.7 scholarships. NCAA DII have 9, NAIA have 12 and the biggie here is NJCAA schools that have 24. This means if the coach awards you a .4 or 40% partial, very common in baseball, he has 11.3 more scholarships to give out. Divide this over four to five years of athletes and a coach may only have 2-3 scholarships to divide up each year for incoming freshman.

There are just over 135,000 senior high school baseball players in the US. Of these players, 8,200 will make a NCAA team as a freshman. This includes DIII and non-scholarship players. The actual number of baseball scholarships for incoming freshman is only around 1,100. Coaches can also recruit you as a walk-on in baseball or award small .1 or .2 scholarships with the verbal agreement that if you make the rotation your scholarship will be re-examined at year’s end.

In other sports we do not recommend this so much, but baseball is much different. Last year alone there were 161 players drafted from the NJCAA into the Major League Baseball Professional Draft. Depending on your goals and how your recruiting is going, considering junior colleges is an excellent choice to get a baseball scholarship. Junior college players are also highly recruited into NCAA DI and DII schools.
