Image via Wikipedia

While there are many intangible factors that go into earning a college athletic scholarship, the whole process can be broken down into 3 easy steps. If you can take charge and master these steps, you will be way ahead of your competition.

1. Game and Highlight Tape

As soon as you have great game film, two to three games, make a tape and send these out to colleges. Once your son or daughter has played a few games in their Senior year, (or Junior year for Spring sports) it is time to package these along with the next two items and get them into the hands of schools that match your recruiting profile. It is not too early to start in your Junior or Sophomore years if these are varsity games, just be aware of NCAA recruiting rules that may prevent the coach from contacting you to discuss these films.

2. Athletic Recruiting Resume

Make an athletic recruiting resume that highlights your accomplishments, includes your stats and interests. You should approach recruiting the same way you would a job. Also include other sports you play and your stats if you excel in those also. Make sure your contact information along with your coaches and high schools is predominate so they can enter you into their recruiting database and have a resume to look at while they are viewing your game/ highlight film.

3. Official Transcripts

Grades and your academics are more important than ever. We have spoken so much about this in the past but it is something you can control and we hate to see talented athletes who are turned down for college athletic scholarships because they did not take care of business in the classroom. Before a coach can truly recruit you, they will need to see an academic transcript. Get copies from your guidance office to send with your athletic resume and film.

These three steps will put your name and face in front of coaches. Now you must be as aggressive as you are on the field, towards your recruiting. The athlete who works hard during recruiting, calling coaches, promoting themselves, sending out the most athletic recruiting packets, often wins. Every year less talented athletes beat out those with better stats because they had a plan for their recruiting, followed through and earned the college athletic scholarship. Do you have the drive it takes to take charge of your recruiting process?

How to determine where you can get a sports scholarship. If you want a college athletic scholarship you must determine your athletic skill level and find colleges that best match your ability. Continue reading

Determining where, at what divisional and conference level, you can earn a sports scholarship will save you a lot of time and make your recruiting efforts more focused and successful. When beginning your recruiting it is important to examine your skills, accomplishments and level of play with an open mind. Everyone wants to play college athletics at the highest level they can. But is that really the best approach to take when searching for a college athletic scholarship?

The best place to start is at college athletic team websites. Each athletic program lists its roster of players and a bio of each player. The bio will contain a list of accomplishments in high school as well as height/weight and hometown. Look at colleges in different divisions, ie DI, DII and difference conferences in each division. There is a huger difference between Big-12 schools and MAC schools. Colleges now have also posted the incoming freshman recruited class. Where do you fit in?

Do your accomplishments to date match some of the incoming freshman class? Are you of similar height and weight? Are there players from your area on the team? Do the players seem to be only from one geographic area in the country? Some coaches only take players from surrounding states, while others have no problem recruiting nationally.

By doing this while making your initial recruiting assessment you can have a much more successful recruiting season. Have a targeted approach to recruiting. Do not just contact schools with out knowing if you have a realistic chance of earning a scholarship.

This approach does not measure the amount of effort put into your recruiting. We have seen athletes who are not as skilled, beat out more accomplished players by having heart and determination during the recruiting process. If you have your heart set on playing at a level that may be out of your reach, go for it, but also recruit yourself to colleges that match your athletic profile more closely.

Do you have what it takes to get a college athletic scholarship? If you have the drive, we will show you the way. CLICK HERE to view the recruiting systems that has helped over one thousand high school athletes like you.

The recruiting process for a college athletic scholarship for international student-athletes is the same for those athletes competing in high school athletics in the United States. You contact college coaches, through phone, email and by sending the personal recruiting packets we recommend. International phone calls can be expensive but we recommend foreign students look into a cheaper internet phone such as Skype or something comparable.

As an International student-athlete you should start your recruiting process early. Don’t wait until late into your Senior year. Getting recruited from overseas takes more time and to earn a scholarship you must still send recruiting tapes and other information coaches need. This will all take longer. Coaches in the US are accustomed to recruiting overseas now.

International student athletes make up a large percentage of rosters in such sports as Hockey, Soccer and increasingly Baseball as well. Students who attend high school outside the US and certain territories must also take either the SAT or ACT and submit grades and transcripts for review to the NCAA Clearinghouse just as any US student does. The main question asked is whether the TOEFL or TWSE tests are acceptable. They are not allowed for students who are pursuing an athletic scholarship or want to play in NCAA Division One or Two.

The positive and negative aspect of being a foreign student athlete is coaches don’t know who you are. Positive in that a coach can recruit you after you make initial contact without much fear of you being well-known in recruiting circles and having to compete with other colleges. When you contact a coach from another Country, believe me, they are going to want to find out who you are and hoping that you turn out to be a hidden athletic scholarship treasure for them. The negative is coaches have to evaluate the talent you play against and work out more logistics than recruiting a player in the US. This can be overcome by again, starting your recruiting early and being aggressive when contacting schools.

As the recruiting process is no different for a student in the US opposed to an athlete in a foreign country, our book, “Get Recruited To Play College Athletics,” is a great resource and step-by-step guide to help you earn the athletic scholarship in the US you deserve. CLICK HERE to review it and download.

The NCAA publishes a guide for International Student Athletes wishing to get a college athletic scholarship in the US. It can be found by CLICKING HERE.

There are a lot of factors that go into a college athletic scholarship search. One of those is the size of your high school that you attend. Does it really matter anymore whether you come from a State or Nationally ranked high school or a rural high school that has never made the State playoffs? Lets examine the differences and the strategies for a athletic recruit from each.

Large high schools that consistently produce scholarship athletes, may get the attention from college coaches every year, but you still must take action. We see this way too much where a star athlete gets lots of visits and attention, but does not go far into the recruiting process. Initial buzz in the recruiting process can die down and be gone in an instant. Even if you attend a magnet school for college coaches you still must follow a recruiting plan that guides you what to do after initial contact with a coach is made. The number one mistake is sitting by the phone, waiting for the coach to call you again and tell you what to do next. If buzz around your recruiting has disappeared, most likely other, more dedicated, hungry athletes have stepped in and have been recruiting the coach as we like to call it.

If you attend a small high school, maybe in a rural area, you may not get the visits. Some will use this as an excuse as to why they can’t get a college athletic scholarship. We see this as an opportunity. You must work a little harder if you are in this position. It is critical that you put together a great recruiting packet and contact schools aggressively. Summer camps and combines are perfect for high school athletes from smaller schools because at these camps everyone is equal and it will give you a chance to impress and compete against athletes from large schools.

Whatever the size of your high school may be, the number one thing we can tell you to do is to TAKE ACTION!

Don’t sit by the phone and wait. Don’t complain that you have had no exposure. You can control the recruiting process with a proven system that gets your name, face and video in front of college coaches from across the country. If you deserve a college athletic scholarship, you can earn one if you want it enough.

Do you want to earn a college athletic scholarship? Let us show you the proven system that will get you recruited above your competition. CLICK HERE

There is still 7 weeks left in summer. More than enough time to get out there and earn a college athletic scholarship at a college that is on your recruiting target list. We have touted the benefits of summer camps for a long time now. Athletes are given the chance to perform for college coaches in person. These evaluations are more beneficial then a coach seeing you on a highlight tape.

Camps most benefit those athletes that, for whatever reason, did not perform well during their regular season and do not have stats that match their true talent. If you are a talented pitcher, but have defensively weak teammates, your ERA will not match the profile of a scholarship baseball player. In football, if you are a great running back, but your offensive line can’t hold a hole open, your total yardage for the season will suffer.

Coaches at these camps are looking for raw athletic talent. It matters more how much potential you have and how coach-able you are. Your in-season stats do not matter at college athletic summer camps. No matter what sport you play, use summer camps to your advantage. If you are in the summer before your Senior year, this is your last chance. Those high school athletes who are younger, use camps to get your name out there, get noticed

You can have hundreds, even thousands of dollars if you do your athletic recruiting yourself. We have seen nothing that points to greater success using recruiting services versus doing it yourself over the past 20 years. We believe that something as important as getting a college athletic scholarships should be controlled by you. After all, this is your future we are talking about.

Most recruiting services just send out your profile by fax along with hundreds of other athletes each day to college athletic offices. There is no way for coaches to go through each of these profiles one by one and decide on whom to call back. You are not setting yourself apart from the competition by going this route. Other services charge you hundreds of dollars to make a recruiting highlight tape. The more you spend on your tape, does no make you a better athlete.

As coaches, the athlete who did their recruiting themselves, showed a genuine interest and determination, are the athletes we are interested in. Do it yourself, save money and show coaches that you are serious.

The NCAA or National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main athletic conference in the country. They offer college athletic scholarships at the Division I and Division II level. Division III does not offer direct athletic aid, but will give recruited athletes aid disguised as “grants” and “performance based financial aid” that will often cover 50% of tuition.

Sports in NCAA DI and DII are either categorized as “headcount” or “equivalency” sports. Headcount sports are given a set number of full-ride scholarships that cover tuition, room and board and fees. For instance, DI Football has 85 scholarships. They are only allowed to award 85 players these scholarships, no more. Most schools will not award their full number at a given time and will reserve spots for transfers and walk-ons.

Equivalency sports have a set number of full-ride scholarships but can divide these up into as many players as they wish. As an example, DII baseball has 9 scholarships. If they give you a 50% partial scholarship, then they have 8.5 more scholarships to award.

NCAA Division I teams have more scholarships per team than DII schools do. Also the Ivy and Patriot leagues in NCAA DI, do not offer athletic scholarships, but will provide grants to recruited athletes that average over 50% of tuition.

The NAIA or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the NJCAA or National Junior College Athletic Association both offer athletic scholarships. They use a headcount and equivalency designation between sports and offer fewer sports than the NCAA does.

Too many athletes get a narrow focus during the recruiting season. The only focus their efforts on NCAA DI schools when there are many other great options to getting an offer to play in college.

If you want a college athletic scholarship then don’t wait any longer. You must start today. Learn how to choose the right athletic conference for your talents and have a successful recruiting season ending with a scholarship offer.

If you want a college athletic scholarships, the timing of your start to your scholarship start and recruiting process has become crucial to your overall success. Continue reading

If you want a college athletic scholarship, the earlier you start the better. The competition is becoming greater every year and by starting earlier in your high school years, you do give yourself an advantage.

No longer can you wait until your senior year and expect to be in a good position to get an offer if you had a great senior athletic season. While that does help, the competition has been working quietly for years behind you. If you are a senior and are reading this, you still can get an offer, but you really have your work cut out for you and need to start now and do it the right way without wasting any time.

If you are in your sophomore or junior year, you are in great time to start thinking about and putting a recruiting plan into place. Start by looking at your G.P.A. and SAT/ACT tests. Not having the grades is the number one reason why talented athletes don’t get any looks from coaches. If you are behind on your grades, make it a priority to do whatever it takes to bring them up to par.

From an athletic standpoint you should attend summer camps and combines the summer before your junior and senior year. Don’t attend just any camp in your sport, but attend a camp that will maximize your exposure and increase your recruiting stock.

While sophomores should just focus on developing their athletic ability along with their grades, juniors need to start adding more focus to the actual recruiting process. Begin to develop a game plan for college and begin laying the necessary groundwork and personal assessments that will guide you through your junior and senior year of competition. As a junior it is also important to make sure your games and matches are getting filmed as this is one of the top items used when making contact with colleges.

It is never too early to start working towards a college athletic scholarship. Just be sure you are following a plan that gives you step by step instructions what to do every year of high school.

If you want a college athletic scholarship then don’t wait any longer. You must start today. CLICK HERE to learn more about how to avoid costly mistakes that will ruin your scholarship chances.
