We assume everyone plays already for the high school team. Playing on your high school team is obviously necessary but playing for an Olympic Development Program (ODP), is the factor you need to set yourself apart from the competition and earn that scholarship. College coaches have begun in an increasing number, to solely recruit scholarship athletes from these programs across the United States.
Tryouts are held in every region and if you make your state team you open yourself up to massive exposure from college coaches. Soccer players still are able to earn a scholarship without playing on these teams, but your exposure is limited and you will face an uphill battle.
Playing on an Olympic Development Program team exposes you to the top talent across the US in every match you play. This is far different from high school matches where there is often limited competition for the best soccer players. After making an ODP team, you must recruit yourself the same to market yourself to college coaches. Those soccer players who market themselves and develop a recruiting game plan, combined with playing ODP soccer, are the one’s who earn a college soccer scholarship.
