To get a softball scholarship, you need to have a plan of action or recruiting plan as we like to call it. There are

those softball players who are active in their recruiting, follow a system, contact college coaches and train to win. Then there are those who do nothing and sit by the phone. No matter your skill level, if you are willing to do whatever it takes, you can earn a college softball scholarship.

Here are 5 tips for success:

  1. Do the recruiting yourself: It is too important to leave to someone else. You need to take softball recruiting seriously and do it yourself. Show college softball coaches that you are serious and want to play for them. A recruiting service that does everything for you may sound great, but it does not set yourself apart from the competition and takes away the most important part of a scholarship search, which is relationship building.
  2. Summer leagues: There are a limited number of softball scholarships. Coaches do not have much time, if any, to actively recruit in-season. The most exposure can be gained by playing in summer tournaments, travel teams, or attending camps at colleges that you have been actively recruiting.
  3. Grades: We can never say this enough. Get good grades! Even having below a 3.0 GPA can eliminate almost 50% of DI schools who will not be able to recruit you. This is something that you can control. Do not let it be a deciding factor if the softball scholarship comes down to you and another athlete.
  4. Skill and physical development: You must put in extra hours away from your team’s practice schedule. Those athletes who do extra skill work and start a strength and conditioning program early in their high school career, are better prepared for games and will play at a much higher level. If you truly want a softball scholarship, this is a much needed course of action to take.
  5. Develop a recruiting system: Start early to identify your personal and family goals and colleges that would be a good fit for yourself. Prepare for recruiting the same as you do for your season. Those athletes who put in the hours for softball recruiting, are the ones who are signing scholarships.

No one said it would be easy to get a softball scholarship. But if you follow a recruiting system, you can guarantee yourself success to get an athletic scholarship. You have to be willing to work harder than any other recruit and put it the time to separate yourself from the competition. Use these 5 tips as a great starting point for your athletic recruiting success.
