With the fall athletic recruiting season underway and recruiting open for all sports, you have already or will shortly be getting recruiting letters in the mail. Sure, it is exciting to be getting these from colleges across the country but don’t let them interfere with your recruiting plan. We have heard of athletes getting hundreds of letters from nearly every DI program in the country, but never so much as a phone call from a college coach. How does this happen? Let’s look at what athletic recruiting letters really mean.

Colleges amass huge databases of high school athletes. Athletic departments buy lists from recruiting services, compile rosters and buy mailing lists from camps, and collect athletic questionnaires. When colleges start the recruiting process they will have in some cases 2,000 or more high school athletes on a list for 20 scholarship spots or less. There recruited list is not very targeted early in the recruiting season. Schools cast a wide net hoping not to miss anyone that could be a potential recruit.

If you got a letter early in September, chances are at least 1000 other high school players got that letter as well. Letters and forms of communication change as the recruiting process wears on. You can tell a schools level of interest in you for an athletic scholarship based on the materials and calls you receive from coaches.

An easy way to forget about all of this letter hype is to start contacting colleges now. Use the recruiting plan laid out by us in our book. Letters, phone calls, recruiting packets. Get them in now and make first contact before coaches are swamped and they won’t even be able to remember your name. Those athletes who have the most success at receiving an athletic scholarship, start early, make first contact, and persevere through the competition. Are you that athlete?

The parents of a high school athlete sometimes feel left out when seeing their son or daughter go through the athletic scholarship process. I have been witness too and heard of too many horror stories of over bearing parents who ultimately cost their son/daughter an athletic scholarship.

Here are 3 quick tips to show you how to be an asset during the athletic scholarship process instead of a liability.

Be active in their academics. A recruit seems to lose focus of academics during the recruiting process and in high school it is sometimes hard to understand why grades are so important. Let the coaches do their work on the field with your student-athlete, but off the field you should help and stay on top of their grades. Over 50% of DI schools can’t admit a student with a GPA of under 3.0 anymore. If there grades are below this it won’t matter how great they are at their sport. Also an athlete who does well in the classroom is another bonus for the college coach. It shows they will be better prepared to handle the stresses athletics places on academics in college.

Take action. Don’t just be involved a little, take action and take the lead if needed when going through the athletic scholarship process. We don’t mean call coaches for your athlete, but help them with school work if needed, be willing to visit schools, help make the personal recruiting packet and keep records and notes on the process.

Help keep them focused. Getting an athletic scholarship is a lot of work. Something most students are unprepared for. It is also easy to quit after being rejected by a few schools. Keep them focused, remind them what is important, going to college, and make sure their reasons for playing in college are realistic.

The athletic recruiting process is an exciting time for both parents and the student-athlete. If you work together it will be a much more rewarding process. We discuss more in-depth strategy for parents in our eBook. We discuss critical mistakes parents make that cost scholarships, how parents should communicate with coaches, and the recruiting strategy from the parent’s perspective. CLICK HERE to view the “Get Recruited To Play College Athletics: Insider Strategy To Win At The Recruiting Game” and help your son or daughter get the athletic scholarship both of you have been dreaming about for a lifetime.

It is becoming more competitive each year for football scholarships. More high school students are looking for athletic scholarships as a means to play for college than before. Athletes area also becoming better educated to the proper way to get recruited to play college football. No longer can you sit on the couch and wait for a coach to call you. Athletes are starting earlier in the high school career preparing and laying the foundation for a scholarship.

There are is approximately 1.1 million high school football players in the United States. Of those, just over 300,000 are seniors. Each one is possible competition for the approximate 17,500 freshman roster spots in the NCAA. This means about 6 in every 100 high school seniors will play college football. The numbers are even less for those who will get a scholarship.

As you can see it is very competitive to get a scholarship. There are 85 scholarships in DI-A football, 63 in DI-AA football and only 36 for DII football. In order to get a scholarship, you must start planning and working towards it no matter what year you are in high school. You don’t have to be a blue chip athlete or even an all-state athlete.

Due to the competitive nature you must treat recruiting as the most important game of your life. Just as you would prepare for a state-playoff game, you should study and develop a game plan for getting a football scholarship.

You need to develop a system that begins with a personal assessment of your talent and ability. From there develop a list of at least 50 schools that fit your profile. You must then initiate contact the correct way and become the recruiter, not the recruited. When done right you can end the recruiting season with multiple scholarship offers.

If you want a college athletic scholarship then don’t wait any longer. You must start today. Start developing your recruiting game plan now and beat out the competition.

If you want a college athletic scholarship, the earlier you start the better. The competition is becoming greater every year and by starting earlier in your high school years, you do give yourself an advantage.

No longer can you wait until your senior year and expect to be in a good position to get an offer if you had a great senior athletic season. While that does help, the competition has been working quietly for years behind you. If you are a senior and are reading this, you still can get an offer, but you really have your work cut out for you and need to start now and do it the right way without wasting any time.

If you are in your sophomore or junior year, you are in great time to start thinking about and putting a recruiting plan into place. Start by looking at your G.P.A. and SAT/ACT tests. Not having the grades is the number one reason why talented athletes don’t get any looks from coaches. If you are behind on your grades, make it a priority to do whatever it takes to bring them up to par.

From an athletic standpoint you should attend summer camps and combines the summer before your junior and senior year. Don’t attend just any camp in your sport, but attend a camp that will maximize your exposure and increase your recruiting stock.

While sophomores should just focus on developing their athletic ability along with their grades, juniors need to start adding more focus to the actual recruiting process. Begin to develop a game plan for college and begin laying the necessary groundwork and personal assessments that will guide you through your junior and senior year of competition. As a junior it is also important to make sure your games and matches are getting filmed as this is one of the top items used when making contact with colleges.

It is never too early to start working towards a college athletic scholarship. Just be sure you are following a plan that gives you step by step instructions what to do every year of high school.

If you want a college athletic scholarship then don’t wait any longer. You must start today. CLICK HERE to learn more about how to avoid costly mistakes that will ruin your scholarship chances.

College football players only graduate at an average rate of 60% in the NCAA. The rate is slightly better for other sports. There are many reasons for this but often they can be prevented in the high school recruiting process. The personal assessment that a high school athlete should do when aiming for an athletic scholarship needs to be done with care and attention. This can make the college athletic scholarship search more successful towards signing a scholarship and later graduating from that college.

Here are the Top 5 reasons why athletes fail in college:

1. Choosing a college for the wrong reasons. When you visit a school on a recruiting trip, it is set up as a sales trip from the coach’s perspective. When you arrive in the fall you often find a football program and campus that feels much different than the “hyped” up one you saw on your visit.

2. Not matching your academic goals. You must match the college that you will be playing at with your academic goals in mind. Will you be able to succeed academically there? Even though you got in, are strong enough of a student? Do they have the major you really want or are you settling because of a scholarship?

3. Not getting along with the coach. You must choose the program and school, never the coaching staff. There is a good chance statistically that if you stay all four to five years, you will see a coaching change at the head coach level and multiple assistant coach changes. The coach that also recruited you is the “salesman” and not the true coach that person is at practice and during games.

4. Choosing the wrong athletic level of competition. Even if the college gave you a scholarship, are you good enough to play there? Will you have to sit on the bench and be a practice player for a few years before you get a realistic chance to start? Or could you have accepted a scholarship from a smaller division and played immediately?

5. Financial Aid changes. Coaches can pull athletic scholarships no matter what you hear to the contrary. Even if you only have a 50% or are a walk-on, can you afford to keep paying to play without having to get a job while you try to compete for a larger scholarship?

Preventing athletic failure in college starts with your high school recruiting. By doing a personal assessment of your recruiting goals and wishes you can better match colleges that fit an athletic profile that will better guarantee success.

Once a coaching staff has decided on an initial list of recruits that are eligible for a college athletic scholarship, usually 50-75 high school or transfer students for each position, the real work starts for the coaching staff. Most evaluations to this point are based on game film, and not that in depth to the athlete’s non-athletic side. This list must be trimmed down, depending on the sport, to only a handful of athletes that will be offered an athletic scholarship.

Besides the natural way that athletes stop getting recruited, other recruits more athletically talented than you, there are a few sure-fire things you can do that will get you dropped from a recruiting list fast!

Academics: If your grades aren’t that strong, let the coaches know in the beginning. This is the worst thing possible to hide from a coaching staff. They are going to find out sooner or later, and later is not the way to go. If they find out early in the recruiting process, coaches can begin to start talking with the admissions office to help you gain admission to the school. If you wait until a month before the signing date, you will be passed up for an athlete of similar talent with passable grades.

Parents: Parents can be a great asset for an athlete getting recruited or the factor that tells the coaches to drop the athlete. Parents that call the coaches constantly during the recruiting process, try to pressure the coach for a scholarship, or question the coaches evaluation of their child all throw up red flags to the coaches. Parents need to walk a delicate line during the recruiting process and are best served helping the athlete make the best decision possible.

Attitude: You can have all the talent in the world, but if your attitude stinks or you look like you could be a attitude problem in the future to the coaches, they will not risk a college athletic scholarship on you. Game films do not always show the true character of a player. When talking to coaches, never complain about your current coach, teammates or playing time. Always be positive and it will help your athletic recruiting.

There are so many factors that go into a coaches decision on who to offer a scholarship to. Use these three tips as a starting point to take the right steps to earning your college athletic scholarship.

The biggest question about getting an athletic scholarship is, “How?”

You know that you are good enough, you know you want a scholarship, you have been dreaming of playing in college your entire life. Now the question is how do you do it?

You could sit back and wait for college coaches to call you. You could even pay another website and post an online profile. Take it from our combined 30 plus years of insider recruiting experience, those last two ways will assure you sit home in the fall after you graduate. Or you take proven steps to earning a college scholarship that work year after year, in every sport.

In order to play in college and get recruited, you must develop a game plan. We stress over and over again that you must treat recruiting like a business and as the most serious game of your life. How do you prepare for a playoff game? Do you sit around and wait to see what happens? Or do you jump into action, create game plans, study the opponent and prepare well in advance?

Do a personal assessment.

Develop a recruiting inventory.

Put together your personal recruiting packet.

Put the plan into action.

Play the game.

Fight to the end and accept your scholarship.

If you treat recruiting like the “Big Game” and it is, you will develop a game plan and stick to it throughout the process. Just as in a game, you might find yourself behind at times. You must continue to fight throughout the game if you want to win. To win at the recruiting game it takes a lot of hard work, planning and the right coaching.
