YouTube is a great resource to help with your college athletic scholarship search. It saves college coaches a ton of time not having to load your individual tapes in and they are quickly able to evaluate double the number of players. If you find the prospect of sending out 100 video tapes or DVD’s and the time, effort and resources that is required of making all of them too daunting then consider adding your own You Tube channel to showcase your videos.

The process of uploading video material there is not difficult. You can even buy a flip cam this holiday season for under $150 and use it to directly shoot new training footage to upload. If you have previous games or matches on DVD the process of uploading them is pretty easy and makes more sense now that YouTube has increased their maximum video length.

Make sure you create your own channel on the site. We don’t want your videos mixed in with the millions of others. This channel will give you your own unique website address that you can include in emails to coaches and within your letters. Add your contact information within the video. Even though the coach is most likely clicking through to the video from the link you sent them, having your contact info, stats and name in-front of them one more time will not hurt.

We still think sending out tapes to prospective coaches is must-do to get recruited so please don’t stop that. Use YouTube to gain additional exposure and allow it to increase the number of colleges you contact. Follow the additional steps in our book about creating your recruiting video and get to work on that athletic scholarship.

Image via Wikipedia

While there are many intangible factors that go into earning a college athletic scholarship, the whole process can be broken down into 3 easy steps. If you can take charge and master these steps, you will be way ahead of your competition.

1. Game and Highlight Tape

As soon as you have great game film, two to three games, make a tape and send these out to colleges. Once your son or daughter has played a few games in their Senior year, (or Junior year for Spring sports) it is time to package these along with the next two items and get them into the hands of schools that match your recruiting profile. It is not too early to start in your Junior or Sophomore years if these are varsity games, just be aware of NCAA recruiting rules that may prevent the coach from contacting you to discuss these films.

2. Athletic Recruiting Resume

Make an athletic recruiting resume that highlights your accomplishments, includes your stats and interests. You should approach recruiting the same way you would a job. Also include other sports you play and your stats if you excel in those also. Make sure your contact information along with your coaches and high schools is predominate so they can enter you into their recruiting database and have a resume to look at while they are viewing your game/ highlight film.

3. Official Transcripts

Grades and your academics are more important than ever. We have spoken so much about this in the past but it is something you can control and we hate to see talented athletes who are turned down for college athletic scholarships because they did not take care of business in the classroom. Before a coach can truly recruit you, they will need to see an academic transcript. Get copies from your guidance office to send with your athletic resume and film.

These three steps will put your name and face in front of coaches. Now you must be as aggressive as you are on the field, towards your recruiting. The athlete who works hard during recruiting, calling coaches, promoting themselves, sending out the most athletic recruiting packets, often wins. Every year less talented athletes beat out those with better stats because they had a plan for their recruiting, followed through and earned the college athletic scholarship. Do you have the drive it takes to take charge of your recruiting process?

The parents of a high school athlete should play a major role in their son or daughter getting a athletic scholarship. Here are 3 quick tips for parents to help their athlete earn a college athletic scholarship. Continue reading

The parents of a high school athlete sometimes feel left out when seeing their son or daughter go through the athletic scholarship process. I have been witness too and heard of too many horror stories of over bearing parents who ultimately cost their son/daughter an athletic scholarship.

Here are 3 quick tips to show you how to be an asset during the athletic scholarship process instead of a liability.

Be active in their academics. A recruit seems to lose focus of academics during the recruiting process and in high school it is sometimes hard to understand why grades are so important. Let the coaches do their work on the field with your student-athlete, but off the field you should help and stay on top of their grades. Over 50% of DI schools can’t admit a student with a GPA of under 3.0 anymore. If there grades are below this it won’t matter how great they are at their sport. Also an athlete who does well in the classroom is another bonus for the college coach. It shows they will be better prepared to handle the stresses athletics places on academics in college.

Take action. Don’t just be involved a little, take action and take the lead if needed when going through the athletic scholarship process. We don’t mean call coaches for your athlete, but help them with school work if needed, be willing to visit schools, help make the personal recruiting packet and keep records and notes on the process.

Help keep them focused. Getting an athletic scholarship is a lot of work. Something most students are unprepared for. It is also easy to quit after being rejected by a few schools. Keep them focused, remind them what is important, going to college, and make sure their reasons for playing in college are realistic.

The athletic recruiting process is an exciting time for both parents and the student-athlete. If you work together it will be a much more rewarding process. We discuss more in-depth strategy for parents in our eBook. We discuss critical mistakes parents make that cost scholarships, how parents should communicate with coaches, and the recruiting strategy from the parent’s perspective. CLICK HERE to view the “Get Recruited To Play College Athletics: Insider Strategy To Win At The Recruiting Game” and help your son or daughter get the athletic scholarship both of you have been dreaming about for a lifetime.

A question that many high school athlete’s, parents and even coaches have a hard time answering during the athletic recruiting process is, “What level can I earn a scholarship at?” There is a big difference between what level can I play at and what level will I be able to earn a scholarship.

Just because a school doesn’t offer you a scholarship, it does not mean you can’t play at that level or within their conference. It is just not going to be at that school. You also want to be able to realize when it is time to drop down a division or conference during the athletic recruiting process. We recommend an athletic recruiting approach that has you making contact across divisions and conferences to judge feedback and then constantly reworking your recruiting game plan until you find your fit.

We have seen too many athletes while we were coaches that were dead set, whether by their choice or their parent’s, that they were a major DI talent. This

athlete could have gotten a scholarship offer at a smaller DI school or DII in an instant, but that wasn’t part of their goals. Don’t be left without a team and decide early on whether your goal is a college athletic scholarship or reaching out of your skill level.

A good amount of time needs to be spent while doing your personal recruiting inventory examining your talent, desire, ability for growth and competition when searching for a college athletic scholarship. You must not let your ego get in the way either. By knowing at what division and level you can earn an athletic scholarship at, makes your sports recruiting more targeted and successful.

In the beginning of the athletic recruiting process we tell athletes to start comparing themselves to the college athletes at schools they are considering. Go online to the athletic teams website. Compare height, weight, overall size. Do you feel that you will be that size in a year or two? Look at the press-release from the previous incoming scholarship freshman class. Do you have similar talent, stats, and ability?

Those are a couple of quick things you can do today to compare yourself and get an idea of where you fall into the athletic recruiting skill levels. It is a little more complex than that when you actually start contacting schools and developing a recruiting game plan with our guide, but that will help answer one of the most common questions we get.

There is still 7 weeks left in summer. More than enough time to get out there and earn a college athletic scholarship at a college that is on your recruiting target list. We have touted the benefits of summer camps for a long time now. Athletes are given the chance to perform for college coaches in person. These evaluations are more beneficial then a coach seeing you on a highlight tape.

Camps most benefit those athletes that, for whatever reason, did not perform well during their regular season and do not have stats that match their true talent. If you are a talented pitcher, but have defensively weak teammates, your ERA will not match the profile of a scholarship baseball player. In football, if you are a great running back, but your offensive line can’t hold a hole open, your total yardage for the season will suffer.

Coaches at these camps are looking for raw athletic talent. It matters more how much potential you have and how coach-able you are. Your in-season stats do not matter at college athletic summer camps. No matter what sport you play, use summer camps to your advantage. If you are in the summer before your Senior year, this is your last chance. Those high school athletes who are younger, use camps to get your name out there, get noticed

and placed on initial recruiting lists and take advantage of the coaching that you are being exposed to.

Camps allow athletes to showcase their true talent away from teammates that may be hindering their college athletic scholarship chances. There is still time to find a great summer camp to attend and possibly earn an athletic scholarship offer on the spot. We have outlined several summer camp strategies in our recruiting book that will make this summer more productive towards earning the college athletic scholarship that you deserve.

Lacrosse scholaships are becoming harder to get each season with the growing popularity and the growing number of high school programs in the country. Colleges are recruiting lacrosse players earlier and earlier each season.

“Not long ago, most college coaches would be surprised if high school kids committed during October or November of their senior year. Now, colleges are done [gaining verbal commitments from prospects] by June before their senior year,” said Matt Kerwick, head coach at Hobart.

College lacrosse coaches are completing their scholarship class by summer before an athlete’s senior year now. No longer are coaches waiting until the fall and seldom do we see recruiting going late into October and early November, when the signing date for the National Letter of Intent is for lacrosse.

It i very important to start planning for your lacrosse scholarship early in your high school career. Those who start in their freshman and sophomore year, making sure their academics are in line, making lists of colleges, and following through with a solid recruiting marketing plan, are those athletes who are accepting verbal scholarship offers in July.

Taking advantage of summer leagues and programs is a great way to get exposure and be seen directly by college coaches. Their college season overlaps with your high school season so it is hard to be evaluated. If you combine a great recruiting strategy while in-season, and use that to your advantage during the summer season, you can really set yourself apart from the competition in your college lacrosse scholarship search.

College lacrosse, for both men and women is an equivalency sport. Meaning athletic scholarships can be divided up amongst multiple athletes. Partial scholarships are the norm, except for the top 5% of athletes. If you were selected for the Under Armour Lacrosse game or similar national game, you should be in-line for a full-ride. If you did not, you must be proactive in your recruiting. Follow a proven recruiting system, and earn the lacrosse scholarship you deserve.

NCAA DI colleges have 12.6 scholarships for men and 12 for women. Colleges will divide these up into partials for as many as 25 athletes. NCAA DII schools have 10.8 scholarships for men and 9.9 for women. Often overlooked is the Junior Colleges which offer an amazingly high 20 scholarship for men and 20 for women. Most of these are full-rides and set an athletes up for success in transferring into a scholarship position at DI or DII schools after two years.

For high school lacrosse players, you must start early and maintain pace throughout the athletic recruiting process. If you truly want a lacrosse scholarship, you can do it if you follow a recruiting guide that shows you step by step how to take action, and what to do each step of the way.

I originally wrote this article just for football although the information in it pertains to all college sports. Whether you are searching for a soccer scholarship or lacrosse scholarship, the process one takes to earn a college athletic scholarship in each sport remains the same.

Football scholarships are the most abundant in the NCAA. There are 85 full-rides in Division 1A, 63 in Division IAA and 36 in DII. There are certain steps you must take in order to get a sports scholarship. In order for the recruiting system to work, you must have some talent and raw athletic ability. You don’t have to be the best in the country, state or even on your team, but you must have potential and some talent for college coaches to work with.

1. Do a personal assessment. Evaluate your abilities, talents and reasons for wanting to play in college. Also what type of college are you searching for athletically and academically.

2. What level can you play at? Put your ego aside and do a real evaluation of your talent and what you want out of a college athletic career. Do you want to play at the biggest college possible and risk sitting the bench? Or are you happy with a smaller school where you can play all four years?

3. Develop a personal recruiting packet. This should contain a athletic cover letter, athletic resume and video highlight and game films. You can do this better and cheaper than any company or service that charges you money to post an online profile or make a highlight tape for you.

4. Initiate contact with colleges. Follow a system that will maximize your exposure to colleges and play the recruiting game on the college coach’s level. This will put you above the thousands of other recruits fighting for the same spots.

5. Communicate and follow through. It is often difficult for high school students to communicate with college coaches. You must mature quickly during this process and ask the right questions and have the correct answers to show the coaches you are the player for them. It is also difficult to keep the drive and determination to get an offer late into the recruiting season if you have already been turned down multiple times.

High school athletes who are able to follow a game plan throughout the entire recruiting season are the ones who ultimately end up with a sports scholarship. It takes a lot of work but if you are willing to be mature and keep your dream alive, you will be able to earn a football scholarship and play in college.

CLICK HERE if you have the determination and are willing to put in the work to earn a sports scholarship.

Do college athletic scholarship recruiting services really do what they promise their athletes?

You are a high school athlete who wants to play in college and earn a scholarship. Should you pay for or hire a recruiting service to help you? If you have done any research into getting a college athletic scholarship you have seen these websites that promise big things and in most cases cost big money. Do they deliver on their promise and can they really help you get money for playing?

The most popular are the athletic profile based websites. For a fee, money, you can post an athletic profile that is promised to be seen by hundreds of coaches. They say they will blast your profile to schools across the country and scholarship offers will come rolling in. Is this the truth?

Well, they will take your money and they will blast your profile to schools across the country. As for coaches viewing your profile online, yes and no. These services will fax your profile to hundreds of colleges, but along with the profile of the other hundreds of registered athletes. It is not possible for a coach to take a stack of profiles and sort through these to figure out who to call. Take a look at the profiles, every athlete looks the same. There is not much of a call to action for the college coach. Also in DI and DII, coaches do not have the time or the patience to sort through online websites. Most of the views you will be getting are from other users, high school athletes online.

The other type are companies that for hundreds of dollars will make a highlight tape for you. They promise a professional highlight tape that will stand out above the competition. This is true, the tape will cost you hundreds of dollars, but what matters in the tape is your talent, not how well the tape is cut together.

Bottom line, save your money. Getting a college athletic scholarship is incredibly competitive. If you want it done right and with success you need to do it yourself. By doing it yourself it shows the college coach that you have ambition and determination. A fax from a website says nothing about you. The more you spend making a highlight tape, does not improve your performance on that tape.

Don’t waste money towards empty promises. If you want a college athletic scholarship then don’t wait any longer. You must start today. CLICK HERE to learn more about how to avoid costly mistakes that will ruin your scholarship chances.

If you want a college athletic scholarship, the earlier you start the better. The competition is becoming greater every year and by starting earlier in your high school years, you do give yourself an advantage.

No longer can you wait until your senior year and expect to be in a good position to get an offer if you had a great senior athletic season. While that does help, the competition has been working quietly for years behind you. If you are a senior and are reading this, you still can get an offer, but you really have your work cut out for you and need to start now and do it the right way without wasting any time.

If you are in your sophomore or junior year, you are in great time to start thinking about and putting a recruiting plan into place. Start by looking at your G.P.A. and SAT/ACT tests. Not having the grades is the number one reason why talented athletes don’t get any looks from coaches. If you are behind on your grades, make it a priority to do whatever it takes to bring them up to par.

From an athletic standpoint you should attend summer camps and combines the summer before your junior and senior year. Don’t attend just any camp in your sport, but attend a camp that will maximize your exposure and increase your recruiting stock.

While sophomores should just focus on developing their athletic ability along with their grades, juniors need to start adding more focus to the actual recruiting process. Begin to develop a game plan for college and begin laying the necessary groundwork and personal assessments that will guide you through your junior and senior year of competition. As a junior it is also important to make sure your games and matches are getting filmed as this is one of the top items used when making contact with colleges.

It is never too early to start working towards a college athletic scholarship. Just be sure you are following a plan that gives you step by step instructions what to do every year of high school.
