The hunt for college football scholarships really picks up come September. College football coaches may begin calling you once per week if you are a Senior and may being sending your recruiting materials if you are a Junior starting September 1st. You on the other hand may call coaches as much as you want.

Many of you will begin to receive letters and phone calls from coaches starting next month. Does this mean you are being recruited for a college football scholarship? Yes and No. The mailing of letters and initial phone calls is just the start to a long exhaustive recruiting season by football coaches. Colleges will mail our thousands of letters and questionnaires to players of every caliber. We have heard of players receiving dozens of letters, but not so much as a phone call after that.

Coaches and especially the Graduate Assistant coaches (each team has two) as tasked with calling up to 100 to 200 players a day. From the coaches perspective they want to start with as large of a recruiting base as possible by contacting literally thousands of players. If you make the inital screening you will be asked to send in a tape for review. Rest assured, all tapes are screened. Coaches can make a decision to see more, pass on you, or place you in a potential pile within minutes.

We have a detailed strategy in our book how to deal with these letters and phone calls to help navigate the recruiting game. It can be hard to tell who is actually interested in you and who is merely making contact to build a base. During the month of August you should be making your initial recruiting list of 50 to 100 schools that match your academic and athletic profile. Begin making contact with coaches in September and mailing out your recruiting packets. The real rush of college football recruiting starts in late October. It is best to make contact early to beat out the thousands of other high school players who want the same college football scholarship.

Your high school coach can be a great help to your athletic recruiting or can absolutely ruin it. We have seen and know high school coaches who take a very active role and do everything from making tapes, calling schools, setting up recruiting visits and everything else that helps to get their athletes recruited to play college athletics.

On the other side is the coach who just doesn’t have the time, the resources or know-how to help their athletes with their athletic recruiting. Your high school or club/summer coach is an important factor in your recruiting process. It is important to let them know early on that you want to play college sports and get a college athletic scholarship. College coaches call hundreds of high school coaches early in the recruiting process because with one phone call, coaches can learn about 20+ players. If your high school coach doesn’t know that you want to play in college, they can’t help you.

If you have a coach that is willing to do everything for your recruiting, consider yourself lucky. A big mistake we see every year is assuming your coach will do it for you because it’s their job. Well, not the case. The only one who can absolutely guarantee your recruiting success is you. You must communicate with your high school coach through out the process. Find out how they can help you and what they can do for you.

Remember, you alone determine whether or not you get an athletic scholarship. Your coach can be a great asset if he/she is willing to help you but you also must combine this help with your own athletic recruiting plan to really set yourself apart from the competition.

The National Letter of Intent is a letter you sign that commits you to a school and acknowledges an agreement to give you an athletic scholarship or other forms of financial aid to play sports for the school. If you sign a letter, it is your official end to the athletic recruiting season. Once the letter is signed, no other schools may contact you.

The signing date varies depending on the sport but most are signed in the early spring on “National Signing Day.” The letter binds you and the school together for one year. You only have to sign the letter this one time and your scholarship is renewed every year you remain in good standing. It does not guarantee playing time but only the scholarship for one year. These letters can be signed at any time although most are signed on the same day.

Let your high school coach, athletic director, principal and local newspaper know about your success. This is important and you should be recognized for your hard work.

Coaches will mail you two copies of the letter to sign, once you fax back an original, Congratualations! You are now a scholarship athlete. It is also important to note that the letter is pending upon acceptance to the college. Signing the letter should be a very happy time for you, all of your hard work has paid off and now you can take a little break before kicking that strength and conditioning program into high gear!
