The high school soccer season has started and that also means the beginning of the college soccer scholarship recruiting season. If you are a Senior high school student-athlete you should be working on your soccer scholarship recruiting plan now and should be ready to put the plan into action.

Complete your athletic and personal profile.

Make sure you have someone you trust or your soccer team is going to be filming your soccer matches and you will have immediate access to a copy.

Start contacting college soccer coaches.

Make plans to visit schools and meet with coaches.

Register with the NCAA Clearinghouse if you haven’t already. Review your grades and classes with your guidance counselor to make sure you are taking all required courses this fall.

The path to a college soccer scholarship can be long and hard. But trust us, it will go by fast. The soccer players that end up with the scholarship are the one’s who took time during the recruiting process to plan out a solid course of action. They have done their research, know what schools match their abilities, set realistic expectations and goals and communicate with college coaches the right way.

If you have already started, great! Keep the momentum going all fall and don’t quit until you get the soccer scholarship you deserve. If you haven’t taken any action yet, start today, don’t wait because your competition already started. You are competing against thousands of other high school seniors for the same scholarship spot. Don’t be left home next fall.

The recruiting process for a college athletic scholarship for international student-athletes is the same for those athletes competing in high school athletics in the United States. You contact college coaches, through phone, email and by sending the personal recruiting packets we recommend. International phone calls can be expensive but we recommend foreign students look into a cheaper internet phone such as Skype or something comparable.

As an International student-athlete you should start your recruiting process early. Don’t wait until late into your Senior year. Getting recruited from overseas takes more time and to earn a scholarship you must still send recruiting tapes and other information coaches need. This will all take longer. Coaches in the US are accustomed to recruiting overseas now.

International student athletes make up a large percentage of rosters in such sports as Hockey, Soccer and increasingly Baseball as well. Students who attend high school outside the US and certain territories must also take either the SAT or ACT and submit grades and transcripts for review to the NCAA Clearinghouse just as any US student does. The main question asked is whether the TOEFL or TWSE tests are acceptable. They are not allowed for students who are pursuing an athletic scholarship or want to play in NCAA Division One or Two.

The positive and negative aspect of being a foreign student athlete is coaches don’t know who you are. Positive in that a coach can recruit you after you make initial contact without much fear of you being well-known in recruiting circles and having to compete with other colleges. When you contact a coach from another Country, believe me, they are going to want to find out who you are and hoping that you turn out to be a hidden athletic scholarship treasure for them. The negative is coaches have to evaluate the talent you play against and work out more logistics than recruiting a player in the US. This can be overcome by again, starting your recruiting early and being aggressive when contacting schools.

As the recruiting process is no different for a student in the US opposed to an athlete in a foreign country, our book, “Get Recruited To Play College Athletics,” is a great resource and step-by-step guide to help you earn the athletic scholarship in the US you deserve. CLICK HERE to review it and download.

The NCAA publishes a guide for International Student Athletes wishing to get a college athletic scholarship in the US. It can be found by CLICKING HERE.

There are many things you must do to get a soccer scholarship. From good grades to a good baseline skill set and mastering the recruiting process. Getting an athletic scholarship in soccer is not that different from all other sports but there is one thing you can do that definitely sets yourself apart from the competition.

We assume everyone plays already for the high school team. Playing on your high school team is obviously necessary but playing for an Olympic Development Program (ODP), is the factor you need to set yourself apart from the competition and earn that scholarship. College coaches have begun in an increasing number, to solely recruit scholarship athletes from these programs across the United States.

Tryouts are held in every region and if you make your state team you open yourself up to massive exposure from college coaches. Soccer players still are able to earn a scholarship without playing on these teams, but your exposure is limited and you will face an uphill battle.

Playing on an Olympic Development Program team exposes you to the top talent across the US in every match you play. This is far different from high school matches where there is often limited competition for the best soccer players. After making an ODP team, you must recruit yourself the same to market yourself to college coaches. Those soccer players who market themselves and develop a recruiting game plan, combined with playing ODP soccer, are the one’s who earn a college soccer scholarship.

I originally wrote this article just for football although the information in it pertains to all college sports. Whether you are searching for a soccer scholarship or lacrosse scholarship, the process one takes to earn a college athletic scholarship in each sport remains the same.

Football scholarships are the most abundant in the NCAA. There are 85 full-rides in Division 1A, 63 in Division IAA and 36 in DII. There are certain steps you must take in order to get a sports scholarship. In order for the recruiting system to work, you must have some talent and raw athletic ability. You don’t have to be the best in the country, state or even on your team, but you must have potential and some talent for college coaches to work with.

1. Do a personal assessment. Evaluate your abilities, talents and reasons for wanting to play in college. Also what type of college are you searching for athletically and academically.

2. What level can you play at? Put your ego aside and do a real evaluation of your talent and what you want out of a college athletic career. Do you want to play at the biggest college possible and risk sitting the bench? Or are you happy with a smaller school where you can play all four years?

3. Develop a personal recruiting packet. This should contain a athletic cover letter, athletic resume and video highlight and game films. You can do this better and cheaper than any company or service that charges you money to post an online profile or make a highlight tape for you.

4. Initiate contact with colleges. Follow a system that will maximize your exposure to colleges and play the recruiting game on the college coach’s level. This will put you above the thousands of other recruits fighting for the same spots.

5. Communicate and follow through. It is often difficult for high school students to communicate with college coaches. You must mature quickly during this process and ask the right questions and have the correct answers to show the coaches you are the player for them. It is also difficult to keep the drive and determination to get an offer late into the recruiting season if you have already been turned down multiple times.

High school athletes who are able to follow a game plan throughout the entire recruiting season are the ones who ultimately end up with a sports scholarship. It takes a lot of work but if you are willing to be mature and keep your dream alive, you will be able to earn a football scholarship and play in college.

CLICK HERE if you have the determination and are willing to put in the work to earn a sports scholarship.

The formula for athletic recruiting is the same across all sports. Whether you play football or soccer, basketball or lacrosse. College coaches want to fill their team with the best available athletes they can find and recruit. Each year coaches compete for the same athletes and their jobs can often depend on what type of freshman class they bring in.

As competitive recruiting is from the athletes perspective, the college coach has much more at stake during the recruiting process. Coaches must find fresh talent every year or risk have losing seasons if the talent doesn’t live up to expectations. As the economy shrinks, athletic departments are getting their budget cut and the first item that they lose is from their recruiting budget.

With smaller recruiting budgets and staffs it just is not possible to coaches to travel to tournaments across the country anymore in most cases. You as an athlete need the exposure to coaches and now is when developing a recruiting plan that saves college coaches time and money will benefit you over the competition.

In order for them to recruit you, they have to know about you. If you become the athlete that has their grades in order, delivers recruiting tapes to their doorstep without asking, calls the coach and takes initiative, you will beat out those who have to be recruited by the coach.

This makes it even more important as an athlete that you make the coaches job as easy as possible and recruit yourself to the college. An athlete who doesn’t have to be chased, found, or potential wastes a college coaches time is very valuable. If you take control of your recruiting, find colleges you can play at, and be the recruit that coaches look for, you will have a successful athletic reruiting season.
