There is still 7 weeks left in summer. More than enough time to get out there and earn a college athletic scholarship at a college that is on your recruiting target list. We have touted the benefits of summer camps for a long time now. Athletes are given the chance to perform for college coaches in person. These evaluations are more beneficial then a coach seeing you on a highlight tape.

Camps most benefit those athletes that, for whatever reason, did not perform well during their regular season and do not have stats that match their true talent. If you are a talented pitcher, but have defensively weak teammates, your ERA will not match the profile of a scholarship baseball player. In football, if you are a great running back, but your offensive line can’t hold a hole open, your total yardage for the season will suffer.

Coaches at these camps are looking for raw athletic talent. It matters more how much potential you have and how coach-able you are. Your in-season stats do not matter at college athletic summer camps. No matter what sport you play, use summer camps to your advantage. If you are in the summer before your Senior year, this is your last chance. Those high school athletes who are younger, use camps to get your name out there, get noticed

and placed on initial recruiting lists and take advantage of the coaching that you are being exposed to.

Camps allow athletes to showcase their true talent away from teammates that may be hindering their college athletic scholarship chances. There is still time to find a great summer camp to attend and possibly earn an athletic scholarship offer on the spot. We have outlined several summer camp strategies in our recruiting book that will make this summer more productive towards earning the college athletic scholarship that you deserve.

NCAA Scholarships are broken down into two categories. It is often a misconception that all athletic scholarships are full-rides or 100%. It depends on the sport how many athletes are able to be given a scholarship. It is important to note that the NCAA regulates this, not the individual member schools. Sports fall into one of two categories for the purpose of sports scholarships. They are either a “headcount” sport or “equivalency” sport.

Headcount sports have a set number of full scholarships to offer. A DI Men’s basketball program has 13 scholarships. If you are offered one, then the coach can have 12 other players on scholarship. The list of headcount sports is small: Football-Men, Basketball- Men/Women, Gymnastics-Women, Tennis-Women, Volleyball-Women.

Equivalency sports also have a set number of full scholarships to offer but differ in that they can divide the money among as many athletes as roster limits allow. For example DI Women’s Golf has 3.6 NCAA scholarships. If they award you a .5 or 50% athletic scholarship, then the coach has 3.1 more scholarships to award. Equivalency sports are all others not listed under headcount sports.

The amount of scholarship monies that college athletic programs have to offer varies every year. They have a set number for the entire team, not each incoming freshman or transfer class. Coaches usually have 25-30% of their total to offer to freshman and transfers because of attrition rates.

Educating yoruself about the recruiting process and NCAA scholarships during your high school years before you start your recruiting will give you the extra edge needed to beat out your competition.

To earn a sports scholarship you have several options to choose from. Schools in the NCAA award sports scholarships in Division I and Division II. Same goes for the NAIA, or National Association of Intercolligiate Athletics in Division I and Division II. The NJCAA, or National Junior College Athletic Association also awards sports scholarships.

NCAA Division III schools do not offer direct athletic scholarships but they do “help” those who are attending the school to play sports. Most DIII schools will offer a financial aid package to those who were recruited that contains grants and other scholarships that total 50% of tuition.

What sports scholarship you go after depends on your personal goals for playing college sports. Is your only goal to earn a full scholarship? Then you need to look at DI and DII schools. Are you looking for a more balanced athletic and social college experience? Then smaller schools might be a better fit.

If a larger, more competitive school offers you a partial scholarship, then if you were to step back and recruit yourself to schools in a smaller division, you would stand a better chance at a larger scholarship or full scholarship.

There are many options, but you first must decide what your personal reasons are for wanting a sports scholarship. By doing a personal assessment of your academic, social and athletic abilities you can make the recruiting season much more rewarding and successful.
